Why Jersey Tomatoes Really Are Worth the Hype

Sun kissed goodness

Every summer, someone asks the same question:

“Are Jersey tomatoes really that much better?”

My answer? Absolutely.

If you’ve ever sliced into a perfectly ripe Jersey tomato, sprinkled it with a little flaky sea salt, and eaten it standing over the kitchen sink before it even made it to the plate, you already know why they’re legendary.

What Makes a Jersey Tomato So Special?

The secret isn’t just one thing—it’s the perfect combination of climate, soil, and generations of farming expertise.

New Jersey enjoys warm, sunny days, cooler evenings, and fertile, well-drained soil that creates ideal growing conditions. The result is a tomato that’s naturally sweeter, juicier, and bursting with rich tomato flavor.

Unlike many grocery store tomatoes that are picked green and ripened during shipping, local Jersey tomatoes are often allowed to ripen on the vine. That extra time makes all the difference.

Peak Season Matters

Jersey tomato season typically runs from late June through September, with the absolute peak arriving in July and August.

This is when tomatoes are at their sweetest and most flavorful. It’s also when local farm stands are overflowing with heirlooms, beefsteaks, cherries, and colorful varieties that rarely make it into supermarkets.

Whenever possible, buy them from a local farm market—you’ll taste the difference immediately.

The Best Ways to Enjoy Them

The perfect BLT must have a Jersey tomato

The beauty of a truly great tomato is that it doesn’t need much.

Some of my favorite ways to serve Jersey tomatoes include:

  • Thick slices with flaky sea salt, cracked black pepper, and extra-virgin olive oil
  • Classic Caprese salad with fresh mozzarella and basil
  • Tomato sandwiches with mayonnaise on toasted bread
  • Bruschetta with garlic, basil, and balsamic glaze
  • Fresh tomato tart with herbs and goat cheese
  • Homemade gazpacho on a hot summer afternoon
  • Slow-roasted tomatoes served alongside grilled meats or seafood

When the ingredients are this good, simple cooking lets them shine.

Choosing the Perfect Tomato

Look for tomatoes that:

  • Feel heavy for their size
  • Have vibrant color with no green shoulders (unless the variety naturally has them)
  • Give slightly when gently pressed
  • Smell wonderfully fragrant near the stem

A tomato should smell like…well…a tomato.

Never Refrigerate a Great Tomato

One of the biggest mistakes people make is storing tomatoes in the refrigerator.

Cold temperatures dull their flavor and change their texture.

Instead, keep them on the counter, stem-side down, and enjoy them within a few days. If they’re perfectly ripe, they’ll reward you with incredible flavor.

A Private Chef’s Favorite Ingredient

As a private chef, I wait all year for Jersey tomato season.

Whether they’re starring in a beautiful summer salad, layered into a rustic tart, folded into fresh pasta, or simply served with quality olive oil and sea salt, they remind us that the best meals don’t have to be complicated.

Fresh, seasonal ingredients have a way of doing most of the work for us.

And when Jersey tomatoes are in season, they deserve to be the star of the plate.

What’s your favorite way to enjoy a Jersey tomato?

I’d love to hear your favorite recipes or family traditions. And if you’re planning a summer dinner party, let’s create a seasonal menu that celebrates the very best flavors of the season.

What’s better then a summer tomato salad?

👩‍🍳 Chef Kim’s Tip

Never refrigerate fresh Jersey tomatoes unless they’re becoming overripe. Cold temperatures dull their flavor and make them mealy. Keep them on the counter and enjoy them within a few days for the best taste.
